# How to Translate Google Meet in Real Time (Captions)

> In Google Meet, turn on captions with the CC button, then open Settings and Captions to choose the spoken language. Translated captions appear only on plans and meetings where Google offers them, so the option is often absent on free personal accounts. If it is missing, run a separate live captioning tool such as Unicaption next to the call: it shows captions with side-by-side translation in 60+ languages, joins nothing, and stores no audio.

## Turn on captions in Google Meet

**1. Join the call**
Captions are a personal setting. You can turn them on without asking the host.

**2. Click the captions button**
Look for the CC icon in the bottom bar. Click it and captions begin at the bottom of the screen.

**3. Set the spoken language**
Open Settings, then Captions, and choose the language people are speaking. Captions follow this setting, not what they actually hear.

**4. Adjust size and position**
Larger text and a stable position make captions easier to read while you also watch faces and slides.

> If captions come out as nonsense, the most common cause is a wrong spoken-language setting. Check it before blaming the audio.

## Turn on translated captions

Where Google offers it, the Captions settings include an option to show captions translated into another language. You pick the spoken language and the language you want displayed, and Meet translates the captions for you. Availability is the problem: it has been tied to particular paid Workspace plans and meeting types, and the list changes. Check Google's current documentation, or ask whoever administers your Workspace account.

## Why translation is missing

- ⚠ **Your account type doesn't include it.** Personal accounts and some plans don't get translated captions.
- ⚠ **Your administrator limited it,** or captions are disabled for your organization.
- ⚠ **The meeting is hosted by someone else,** and the organizer's account determines what features the call has.
- ⚠ **Your language pair isn't supported,** especially for less common languages.
- ⚠ **You're joining by phone,** where there is no caption interface.

## Translate any Meet call, whatever the plan

A separate captioning tool works from your own device's audio, so it doesn't care about the host's plan. It listens to the Meet tab or your computer's sound and shows captions and translation in its own window. Because it isn't inside the call, no one is notified and no bot joins. The mechanics are in [how to caption computer audio on Mac and Windows](/blog/caption-system-audio-mac-windows.html), and the permission question is covered in [live captions without host permission](/blog/live-captions-without-host-permission.html).

| Option | Cost | Needs host | Translation |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Meet captions | Included | No | Spoken language only |
| Meet translated captions | Plan-dependent | Sometimes | Supported languages only |
| External captioning tool | Free tiers or paid | No | Depends on the tool |

## How Unicaption fits

Unicaption is a real-time captioning and translation copilot that runs beside Meet instead of inside it.

- ✓ **Tab audio or microphone:** capture the Meet tab in Chrome, or use the desktop apps for system audio
- ✓ **Custom dictionary** for names and terminology, with built-in medical, legal, and government terms
- ✓ **Nothing stored:** end-to-end encrypted, audio never saved, transcripts deleted when the session ends, never used to train models

Start with the free plan: 30 minutes every week, no credit card.

## Frequently asked

**How do I get live translation in Google Meet?**
Turn on captions with the CC button, then check Settings and Captions for a translation option, which depends on your Google plan. If it isn't there, run a separate tool such as Unicaption, which shows live captions with side-by-side translation in 60+ languages from your own device's audio.

**Why are there no translated captions in my Google Meet?**
Usually the account type, administrator settings, the host's plan, or an unsupported language pair. You can't fix most of these as a participant, so a separate captioning tool is the practical workaround.

**Can I translate a Google Meet call without the host knowing?**
An external tool that listens to your own audio doesn't notify the host or join the meeting. Check the rules of your organization and the meeting before using any outside tool on confidential calls.

**Does Unicaption work with Google Meet?**
Yes. Unicaption captions the audio coming from your browser tab or computer, so it works with Meet, Zoom, Teams, Webex, and any other source. Nothing joins the call and no audio is stored.
