A per-minute rate is quoted for connected time, but a working shift includes waiting between calls, note resets, and unpaid gaps. Twenty-five billable hours can easily occupy a forty-hour week. That's why the calculator asks for billable hours — the honest input produces the honest number.
The second trap is the 1099 line: as a contractor you carry both halves of payroll tax plus your own equipment, internet, and certification costs. Gross-to-take-home is usually a bigger drop than new interpreters expect, which is why the set-aside field defaults to 25%.
