Every classroom with an English language learner has a student decoding the lesson twice — once for the language, once for the content. The overlap is real too: a hard-of-hearing student from a multilingual home, or a newcomer student still acquiring English *and* processing lectures through hearing aids, needs both jobs done at once.

Why classroom speech is hard to follow — and to caption

Teachers are not newsreaders. They pace, turn to the board, answer interruptions, and shift between careful explanation and rapid aside. For a student working in a second language or from partial audio, the asides are where the lesson quietly leaves them behind — and they are also where captioning earns its keep or fails.

  • Distance and movement. A teacher walking the room fades in and out of any single microphone. The closer the mic travels with the voice, the better every student's captions get.
